I.Inspiration
Windows have been around in people’s lives for centuries. Le Corbusier, the Swiss-French pioneer of modernist architecture, once said “the history of architecture is also the history of windows.” However, the primary function of windows has barely changed since they were first invented. I therefore present the proposal of Metadow, a high-tech window that links virtual reality to the real world.
The prevalence of metaverse/virtual reality
The concept of the immersive virtual world has gained incredible popularity in recent years. People are excited about the possibility of living in alternative realities. Technology companies are scrambling to hop on the metaverse bandwagon. However, despite the great potential of virtual reality in fields like military, medical training, education, etc., the limitations of today’s VR technology are apparent. Uncomfortable headsets, expensive development expenses, and motion sickness…all show that there is still room for improvement.
The idea of Metadow is an innovative approach to the immersive experience. Unlike the traditional VR and AR application that requires a headset or smartphone, Metadow turns your house windows into projection screens, creating an illusion that your whole living space is teleported to a virtual world.
Why choosing window
Although the functionality of windows hasn’t changed much(admission of light and air), we symbolize windows and give them special meanings. As an essential component of the architecture that connects the interior and the exterior, windows often carry positive meanings such as hope, longing, and opportunity. Microsoft operating system is also named “Windows” because the graphical user interface establishes connections between the operating system and users. Therefore windows are the perfect medium to link the virtual and physical world, metaphorically and physically.

II. Concept
Metadow is designed to be bundled with virtual real estate projects in response to people's doubts about today's virtual real estate (high price but little use). It allows people to see the outside view of their virtual real estate in their real-life houses. To quote from my real estate finance professor, the biggest factor that determines a property's value is location. Metadow in a sense eliminates the location factor and is equivalent to having estates worldwide.
The immersive experience that comes with Metadow will be varied depending on different geographical locations, building types, and audiences. I hereby list four possible applicable fields of Metadow, where I employ digital post-processing to recreate the vision of customized virtual worlds using Houdini, Photoshop, and AfterEffects.

Combining the outdoor view with local characteristics and mythology, regional-exclusive spectacles will be available for tourists on their windows 24/7.

If you have to live in a place because of your work but secretly wish to live somewhere else, Metadow can bring the other world for you at little expense.

A low-cost alternative to the nowadays popular Getaway, you can escape from reality for relaxation by changing the virtual view at your home.

The most immersive gaming experience, your favorite game world is right there outside of your bedroom window. Also applicable to movies, TV shows and other media

The first immersive world is inspired by Heilongjiang, the northernmost province of China, my homeland. The widespread folklore says there is a black dragon guarding people dwelling on its shores.

The firefly forest in Towa-Cho Japan inspires the second experience, where millions of Gengi fireflies will gather every year. Only surrounded by nature may we regain a sense of inner peace and our memory of childhood.

The immersive world can be based on purely fictional settings. It can even be an alienated planet that grows poisonous mushrooms. Wouldn’t it be the ultimate fantasy of movie lovers and gamers–living in a world of their favorite movies or games?
